NEW! Liberal Arts Math Textbook
Jim Rutledge, Editor for MERLOT Mathematics, has authored a new Liberal Arts math textbook entitled Math Is Everywhere! Explore and Discover It! that was published by Pearson Custom Publishing in August, 2005.
Math Is Everywhere! is a unique, project-based textbook and course of study for college students, particularly those who are Liberal Arts majors, and for anyone interested in mathematics and its relevance and application in today's world. It emphasizes active learning and quantitative literacy and makes extensive use of Web-based resources, many of which are in the MERLOT Mathematics collection.
For students who enjoy math as well as for students who may be math-avoiders or wonder "Why do I have to learn this?" or "When will I ever use this?", this textbook has the answers! They soon discover that mathematics has many fascinating and practical connections to music, art, architecture, nature, sports, finance, food and much more. Student responses have been extremely positive.

A few examples of what students have said about this text and its project-based teaching/learning approach:
This is the most fun I’ve ever had in Mathematics. I wonder why someone hasn’t thought of this sooner.
Math Is Everywhere! is probably THE single best test I have ever used... I was very intimidated by math prior to taking this class and now feel much more confident. Great job and great class!
I have actually used the words "Math" and "Fun" in the same sentence many times during this class which is something I have never done before. I will recommend this class to everyone (especially math-phobics) and thank you for changing my attitude about math.
I loved our text. It is by far the best mathematics book I've had the pleasure of using! You personalize math well and really present real life analogies for everything. So much of math seemed abstract before. You did an excellent job of bringing math into the realm of reality.
I would definitely say that my attitude towards mathematics has changed after taking this class. I really enjoy learning about the deeper connections between numbers and life whether it is nature, music, art, or even financial concerns.
